That is a historical typo, which is kept for backwards compatibility. By the time, it was noticed, there were already lot's of installations and fixing the typo would have resulted in breaking these systems.
In order to preserve backwards compatibility, it was decided to keep the wrong spelling, but make the previously hardcoded strings configurable options.
