Book Review: Drupal 6 JavaScript and jQuery

When I first read the title of the book, my thoughts were "Oh great, two nested niche topics, only specialists could be interested in. Nobody without a strong technical background in the field will be able to understand it". I'm glad to say, that my first impression was utterly wrong.

Pimp my Rollerblades

Seen yesterday, when visiting friends:

inline skates on a stack of tires

I know, inline skaters love to modify their gear by replacing standard bearings and wheels with all kinds of special equipment, but car tires? This seems to be a bit over the top. What is that kid up to?

Putting a notepad into Drupal's sidebar

Posted in

I co-manage this Drupal project, where the first action of my daily routine, right after logging in, is to check the list of recent logs entries for things, that require my attention. The server, hosting the website, is not the fastest one. Two clicks and scrolling down in between them in order to access the logs, results in a considerable and annoying waiting period. The problem gets even worse, with content creation, as this particular project makes heavy use of CCK node reference fields. Adding a new node usually involves also adding several auxiliary nodes as well.

Disabling the breadcrumb navigation in Drupal for content pages

Posted in

Breadcrumbs are one of the more controversial navigation elements in Drupal. Having a "you are here" trail of links at the top of the page is surely helpful for forums and administrative pages, where the user often navigates up and down in a hierarchy of pages.

Laws, Spam and Oil tankers

I really thought, with the exponential growth of the web, spammers would have given up trying to harvest email addresses from webpages. Seems like I was wrong as today I, finally received the first spam mail to the only email address, published on this website. Why did I do such a foolish thing? Well, say thank you to German politicians and an ill-bred law called TMG, which states that you have to, if your website meets some sloppy defined criteria.

Filing driver CDs and DVDs

Do you know this problem? You buy a piece of computer hardware and you get a driver CD in a sleeve. You buy a computer magazine and you get a bonus CD in sleeve. You buy washing powder and you get a free movie DVD as special advertising stunt (in a sleeve, of course). After some time, all those loose discs tend to pile up in some drawer of your desk and it becomes a nightmare, finding the one again, you are looking for.

Protecting your website's content from deep linking, when using the Drupal CMS

Posted in

Let's assume you operate a blog on your Drupal website. Let's further assume, you regularly write blog posts, containing things like zip archives or graphics. In that case, you have two problems. The first being, that Drupal throws all file attachments into the same directory, which occasionally leads to undesired automatic renames. The second and more annoying one is, that sooner or later someone will directly link to your files from a social media website. Such deep links will cost you bandwidth, without giving you the chance to convert those visitors into readers.
